    Typhoon Meranti Tears Through Taiwan

Typhoon Meranti rips through Taiwan and China at 230 mph, killing 28, injuring 44, and destroying a 800-year-old bridge. It is recorded as the strongest typhoon since Haiyan in 2013. More than 900,000 homes lost electricity and more than 500,000 homes had trouble with water supply.

“Typhoon Meranti is away from the Taiwan main island, but still our staff and volunteers are in the mobilization preparation,” says Taiwan Red Cross spokesman. “Hundreds of thousands were waiting for repairs.” she says.

As it made its way over to China, it has slowed down to a speed of about 135 mph with gusts of wind up to 175 mph.

“There’s only one other tropical system in modern history that has been able to get to a strength of over 110 mph (180 kph) and sustain that for over 24 hours,” CNN meteorologist Tom Slater states.

Despite the drastic change in speed, there has been flash flooding, heavy rain, and dangerous winds with possibilities of mudslides in eastern China.

“The storm was most intense from 1 a.m. until 3:30 a.m. where our hotel was swaying significantly back and forth. Water was streaming into our rooms,” CNN correspondent Matt Rivers said from Xiamen.

Due to it being a holiday in China, many families had gotten together. Winds had still been harshly blowing in Xiamen and coastal cities.
