How to Read Faster

Reading is something that many people have a love-hate relationship with. Whether you like the activity or not, everyone can benefit from doing it faster. There are some simple changes you can make to your reading habits in order to get it done in less time.

  1. Don’t read.

One of the best ways to get around “reading” is to listen to an audiobook. Audiobooks can be helpful because you can listen to them while doing almost anything that you would normally do with your free time.

The classics that you’re assigned to read in high school are usually in the public domain, meaning you can find the audiobook online for free. When this isn’t an option, you can purchase the audiobook, or go to the next bit of advice.

  1. Use a “pointer.”

Most people will go back and reread several times per page when they don’t need to. Using a pointer, such as a pen or your finger, can prevent you from doing this. This alone can allow you to read much faster, but the next tip will take you to the next level.

  1. Start a few words in.

Almost everyone will look at the first word of the line and then read every single word all the way to the last word of the line. You don’t actually need to do this. For example, stare at the word “RIGHT” below:

LEFT     RIGHT

You can still read the word “LEFT” using your peripheral vision. This can be a bit difficult to get used to, but it will help you read much faster. Start each line of a page by looking at the second word in, and then stop reading the line at the second to last word. You can increase this number to two or three as you get used to it.

Combining these techniques will make your English homework a breeze.
