Warriors Hang On; Take Game 1

On Sunday, May 14, the Golden State Warriors and the San Antonio Spurs battled it out in a fierce Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. The game started out rough for the Warriors when San Antonio led by 20 points in the second quarter.

Point guard, Stephen Curry started the rally for the Warriors when they went on an 18-0 run in the third quarter. Curry scored 40 points and hit a tying 3-pointer with 1:48 left. The Warriors rallied from way behind when San Antonio’s star player, forward, Kawhi Leonard, left the game due to an ankle injury.

The Warriors went on to beat the Spurs 113-111 and take Game 1. “It’s the playoffs. You’ve got to expect everything,” said Curry. “I wouldn’t call it smooth sailing at all. We’ve actually had to execute and get to this point.”

San Antonios’ coach, Gregg Popovich, had no update on Leonard’s ankle. Leonard had eight rebounds,  three assists, and made all 11 of his free throws. “It’s a tough break. He’s coming from an injury on that ankle and he tweaked it twice in the last minute he played,” guard, Manu Ginobli said. “So we couldn’t react to his absence.”
The Spurs and Warriors will continue onto Game 2 on Tuesday, May 16 in Oakland.
