Ripon High Varsity Girls Water Polo Team dominated Sonora High School, 9-6, while wearing caps that support Breast Cancer Awareness. On Thursday Oct. 6, 2023, the RHS girls drove up to Sonora High to show off their Breast Cancer spirit while playing.
Junior Tiffani Hunter, the goalie on the team, had eight blocks during the game. Hunter stated, “I think people should represent breast cancer because it’s a very serious disease and many people that are fighting cancer don’t have many people to support them. I feel that having people to support you will make you want to fight harder.”
Alicia Biedermann, a mom of a player on the team, is a breast cancer survivor. Biedermann was pleasantly surprised by the subtle movement from the girls.
When asked how she felt seeing the girls in the caps Biedermann replied, “I’m so grateful to be alive, I know not every woman is able to beat this disease. Cancer changes you. You lose a bit of yourself because you understand how short life can be. I feel lucky that I got to see these girls representing something bigger than themselves.”
The caps that the girls wore said the words “For Alicia” in pink with a breast cancer ribbon. They wore them with pride and were happy to represent her and every survivor.
Biedermann exclaimed, “It makes me emotional. Most of the girls on the team were by my side during treatments and some even have a family member that has been touched by the disease. It is a simple thing, wearing a cap, but it reminds you that you have the Ripon tribe supporting you.”
The RHS water polo girls have not had their pink out game yet, but they plan to show even more support with tattoos and pink zinc at their last home game on Thursday, Oct. 12, against Kimball.
Wearing a cap may seem like a small gesture, but that was all that they felt was needed to support the people who are, or have, been fighting the disease. Make sure to show your breast cancer spirit this October for the survivors and in honor of the women that have passed.
