Have you ever heard of curling? Curling is an ice sport where players slide eight stones on a sheet of ice toward a target with four different segmented areas. Their matches are called bonspiels and the team closest to the middle of the target is the official winner. As a matter of fact, there is a curling club here at Ripon High where students can learn about and play this sport.

Former RHS Spanish Teacher, Adam Giedd is the advisor of the club and works to lead the members in their curling endeavors.

“Strategy and learning the core mechanics and fundamentals of curling so I won’t mess up helps me prepare,” states Tyler Thomason.

This shows how since joining Curling Club students have worked very hard to adapt and learn so many important skills to help them compete on the ice.

Due to unfortunate circumstances Curling Club hasn’t been able to be as involved this year as they hoped but they plan to get back on track for next year.

“We haven’t been able to come together as much recently because of hectic schedules. This year has also been tough because the ice rink in Stockton we usually go to has raised their prices so it’s been more difficult to get in. Along with that, State this year was around eight hours away creating another obstacle,” stated Thomason.

The club wants to encourage more students to join to learn about the fun and skill of curling. Many students who joined the club have no curling experience and come out as talented players.

Thomas added, “This year we really want to get new people on the ice and teach them how to curl while creating a competitive team so we can dominate at State.”

So if you’re interested in getting involved at Ripon High and learning something new, make sure to take a look at Curling Club.
