Malia Locarnini is a senior at Ripon High who embodies the meaning of involvement as captain of the Cross Country team, Vice President of the Girls League, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Yearbook. Needless to say, her passion for leading and commitment to each have really shaped her experience while in high school.
Locarnini, a member of the Cross Country team since her freshman year, said “Nerves quickly became excitement as I improved and bonds with teammates developed over the past 4 years.”
This year being captain brings in new perspectives for Locarnini, especially with new coaches.
“I feel really honored to be leading our team,” Locarnini says.
Beyond athletics, Locarnini also lends her efforts to Girls League, a well known club at Ripon High that is very involved in the community. One major project they have done so far this year was the Lemonade Stand fundraiser for children with cancer.
“It was really nice to show our support for people in Ripon with cancer and their loved ones,” Locarnini states.
As Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook, Locarnini balances responsibility with fun.
“I’ve been in yearbook for four years and being editor is lots of work, but I love working with my co-editor Kennedy Winter and the rest of the staff,” says Locarnini.
Managing such an enormous job has been hard; however, it was easy to see that she embraces the experience with great enthusiasm.
As part of multiple leadership roles, Locarnini believes those have been crucial to her high school experience.
“Getting involved shapes your experience. You don’t have to be a captain, but being a part of something lets you meet amazing people and gain experiences you’ll be forever grateful for.”
Whether on the trails, in the classroom, or through community projects, Locarnini demonstrates what it is to be a leader at Ripon High.
