As thanksgiving rolls around, fall sports have officially ended. But when one door closes, another one opens as winter sports are officially getting underway. This includes RHS as their winter sports include basketball, wrestling, etc. On Nov 23, 2024, girls basketball came back to Ripon high school with the girls basketball tournament, and there were many positives to look at from the varsity teams performance.
The tournament was a scrimmage for the girls, and there were no winners or losers for any of the teams the RHS players went against. However if there was a score, the RHS girls basketball team believed they would come out the winners. The tournament took place at the Ripon High north gym, and several teams came to put their best foot forward. The RHS varsity basketball team played three of these teams over the course of the day.
The team was a little rusty in their first game, missing shots and struggling on defense. However as the games went on they improved drastically and by the end of the third game they weren’t allowing any points on defense and were sound passing the ball around. The team still had some trouble shooting, but as the season goes on they will be able to turn that around.
Junior point guard, Scarlett Ponce, stated, “The only concern I would have is my teammates getting too hard on themselves. Missing a shot and keeping their head laying low, these are things that are part of the sport… It is all about perspective… so the only thing I would be concerned about is team confidence.”
The team played very well in the tournament, and as the season progresses their confidence and their offensive skills will improve. By that point, the team could be unstoppable.
