The Coding Club has been around for a couple of years at RHS, but this year its under new leadership. Senior Andrew Hibbs and junior Jonny Salinas are the co-presidents of the club. So far this year they have began to work on an open source project, which essentially means a project that anyone can join in on and showcase their skills. It is a great way to build teamwork for the club. This project is supported by former RHS student, Luke Behr.
The club plans to prepare for what is known as Hackathons. Hackathons are a competition event where a group of programmers gets together and works on a project under a time limit which they will be judged on. Some Hackathons even have cash prizes!
The two programmers both found a love from programming from Mr. Derricks course here at Ripon HIgh. “I love programming because of the endless possibilities it gives you,” stated Salinas.
With Salinas still being at Ripon High next year, he has a couple of goals for the future of the club. “My goal with the coding club is to expose people to possibilities within coding and give them a place to share with and motivate others.”
Hibbs’ next year plans are to go to San Jose State, major in aerospace engineering, and then enlist in the Air Force.
When asked what programming means to him, Hibbs stated, “It’s a creative outlet, and it lets me express myself.”
With a couple of serious projects and plans for Hackathons, the future of the Coding Club looks to be bright. Make sure you go check it out at their next meeting!
