On Wednesday August 27 the Ripon High School boys water polo team opened their season with a surprising start. Grappling with challenges like graduated seniors and working with a new head coach, resulted in a sobering final score of 8-23 versus the Turlock Bulldogs.
Ripon started with the ball, but it was quickly overturned by the Turlock Bulldogs. Senior Jacob Packwood on Turlock, number 15, made the first goal of the game which was then led on by many more. The Ripon Indians had a difficult time keeping pace with the Bulldogs and this was just another factor to the loss. Senior Matthew Lee from Ripon offered his insights on the beginning of the season saying, “We’re a young team, so it’ll just take time to get everyone in shape and to get us used to the pace of high school water polo.” The Ripon Indians see areas where they need to improve and are planning to work on these things.
If you’re tempted to discount this young team, keep in mind this final thought from Lee, “Our team has a lot of heart, and it’s not easy playing water polo. It’s a hard sport, so just respect the guys that come out and play.”
