On Tues, Sep. 23 Ripon High held its first ever Poetry Cafe. This event was located in the library and it gave students a chance to broadcast their skills such as reading poems, performing skits, or reading an excerpt from their favorite book. On top of the students performing their own arts there was also a peaceful atmosphere. This can be thanks to Ripons’ very own librarian,Mrs.McPeak, who made sure everyone was comfortable with peaceful jazz music and fall themed desserts.
The Poetry Cafe was held during the students lunchtime and even though the crowd was small they made sure that everyone’s works of art were appreciated and welcome. To kick off the event McPeak played a poem by Maya Angleou and right after we had our first participants. There were only four participants but each performed a different topic. The first participant read an excerpt from his favorite book and explained why it spoke to him. The second reading a poem they created from their creative writing class describing the difficulties of having divorced parents and two separate houses. After a brief break so everyone could have their food we started back up with a poem by Edgar Allen Poe titled The Raven. As the end of lunch neared and all performances were complete everyone gave one last round of applause for the cool performances they watched. And in conclusion, the Poetry Cafe was a success for everyone. From the delightful fall decorations all the way to the delightful performances.
