In the spirit on Halloween time, children throughout the country are excited to begin their holiday adventures. Shopping for costumes, carving pumpkins, and decorating are the necessary preparations for the Halloween season. However, the most exciting and thrilling part of the night is when it’s time to trick-or-treat. Little kids going around the neighborhood in their costumes, walking door to door, hoping to find a surprise when the door opens. Which may lead us to the question, are teenagers too old to trick-or-treat?
In a recent poll done at Ripon High School, many students of all ages agreed that trick-or-treating is a fun activity that should be done for kids of all ages, including teenagers. Many students added the factors of free candy, and the fun you can share with your friends. Freshman Paige Winters said, “I think you’re never too old to trick-or-treat. I think it’s fun to dress up with your friends and go out. Even adults do it.”
Sophomore Gracyn Taylor stated, “I think we should be allowed to trick-or-treat if we want since we are still kids, but since it’s not socially acceptable for kids our age we shouldn’t.” Many students agreed, that if you want to trick-or-treat, then you should be able to without others judging.
On the other hand, some students believe that teenagers going out in costume may scare the children, and take away from the spirit of Halloween. Sophomore Sydney Vernon said, “Trick-or-treating is meant to be for small children to have fun and teenagers take away some of the fun for them because they get less candy and scare the little kids.”
In regards, an adult, who wishes to remain anonymous, stated, “I think Halloween should be left to the younger children. When the younger children are involved, it’s a cute holiday. Rather when some teenagers are involved, it’s sometimes gory and portrays the bad things happening in the world.”
Overall, most teenagers agreed that trick-or-treating should be allowed for people of all ages because of the fun and excitement involved. On the contrary, most adults believe that, for the spirit of Halloween, teenagers should stay home and leave the trick-or-treating to the children.
