Kevin Durant, the newest Golden State Warrior, did his team proud on Thursday night, with 39 points against his former team, Oklahoma City. Oracle Arena stood loud and proud as Golden State fans watched their team dominate their opponents 122-96. Two-time MVP, Stephen Curry, finished off the night with 21 points and 7 assists. Other than a tough loss, Oklahoma City fans also sensed some tension between Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, the point guard for OKC.
Over last summer, history was made when the record-setting Kevin Durant decided to sign with the former NBA champions, The Golden State Warriors. Many were shocked and hearts were broken, but Golden State fans rejoiced in the gaining of another amazing player. Oklahoma City fans were saddened by this, but nobody was more bitter than Russell Westbrook. To this day, Westbrook and Durant haven’t had an exchange of words, just side comments to the media. Durant said, “The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based for the potential growth for my growth as a player.” Oklahoma City is still recovering from the loss of their star player, but Golden State seems to be back as strong as ever.
In the first quarter of the game, Golden State gained an astounding head start of 37-11, thanks to the help of Durant’s 16 point run. Klay Thompson also stood out later in the game, finishing with 18 points.
Throughout the game, Durant received lots of criticism and hate, from the players on the opposing team to fans across America. One person who supports Kevin Durant was Draymond Green, who has stuck by his side. Green said, “I think it’ll be a lot of emotions. They’re going to want to beat him really bad. He’s going to want to beat them really bad. In turn, we’re going to want to beat them really bad because we’re going to want him to beat them really bad.”
Overall, The Warriors showed their skills and proved to the NBA franchise that they have what it takes to be champions. A sold out Oracle Arena supported their team and cheered them on for the win, whose record is currently 4-1. Golden State will soon be taking on the New Orleans Pelicans at Oracle Arena on November 7.
