A Home-run of a Season
Varsity softball hit of their season with a strong start and they are continuing to keep that energy up. With an overall record of 14-7, the girls seem to be working hard to ensure their success in the season. The team is described as young and having a good atmosphere which seems to playing a vital role in the team’s success this season. They have even qualified for the D4 CIFSJS Sections (California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section).
The team is young this year due to the many freshmen and sophomores on the varsity team and they believe that will be the key to their success in upcoming seasons.
“We aren’t losing that many players this year and I know there is a lot of talent coming in. I believe that will help us in upcoming seasons,” Junior Madison Rodriguez stated.
Both the team and the coaching staff believe that they have secured their success for seasons to come and they have high expectations for the team.
“We are young, but blessed with talent. Our goals really won’t change. We expect to compete at a very high level. We have dedicated softball players who work hard. We should be right in the hunt for the league championship next year,” Varsity Coach Vernon stated.
Freshman Sydney Thomason is among the girls who have moved up to varsity this year and is considered one of their best pitchers. Being on Varsity as an underclassmen comes as a great responsibility.
Thomason stated, “I have had so much fun this season. I just knew that I would have to step up and do my best all season. My favorite game was when we beat Hughson because we had lost to them before and being able to beat them really showed how we came together as a family and worked as a team”.
The challenge of a new and young team was no stranger to the team at first, but the girls were able to pull together and create a fun atmosphere with each other.
“We were kind of shaky at first because we had so many new people and we weren’t used to each other yet. I think it was hard for the freshmen because not only were they playing with people they don’t know that well, they were still getting used to being in high school, but after a couple games we all started to bond and now it’s really awesome,” Junior Sydney Vernon stated.
The team is excited to move on to playoffs and they are happy with the atmosphere they are taking with them.
“The team is very fun to coach. They are very upbeat during the games and have fun at practice. I am truly blessed to have the privilege of coaching at RHS,” Coach Vernon stated.
