The Oakland Athletics announced on Monday, February 6 that the field at the O.co Coliseum would be named “Rickey Henderson Field” after the Hall of Fame legend, left fielder, Rickey Henderson. The field will be honored in his name on Opening Night on April 3.
“This is an incredible honor and I am humbled that the field I have so many incredible memories on is now named after me,” said Henderson. “I love this organization and our fans and look forward to contributing to our success for many years to come.”
Rickey Henderson played for the Oakland A’s for 14 years, breaking records which led him to the Hall of Fame in 2008. Henderson holds the record for all-time stolen bases with 1,406 and also holds the record for runs scored with 2,295.
The A’s also announced that Rickey will be joining the front office as a special assistant to the president Dave Kaval.
“Rickey Henderson is the greatest Athletic of all time. It is fitting we honor and recognize his impact on our franchise by naming our playing field after him,” said Oakland A’s president Dave Kaval. “In addition to his current role on our baseball development staff, I am also excited he will be joining us in the front office to serve as a representative of Green and Gold baseball.”
The Oakland Athletics start their season on Monday, April 3 against the Los Angeles Angels in Oakland.
