Mexico: A Ministry for Myself

The dusty polluted roads that served as a home to the saddest mangy dogs you will ever see, the hot sun, the murky water, and the people filled with love– Yes, I will miss Mexico, every bit of it.  It’s the most encouraging thing to see people with smiles on their faces that are under circumstances that would seem hopeless to anyone else. How about when kids my age from the community we stayed at help us set up camp?

The last two times I have gone to San Luis Rio Colorado Sonora, Mexico on a mission’s trip I left knowing we had ministered to people, but feeling more ministered to myself.  This time coming back I had a hard time transitioning back to “normal” life.  I miss sleeping in tents, falling asleep to the sound of barking dogs and crazy loud music, and taking cold showers I thought to myself, this is weird. I finally realized that I didn’t necessarily miss those things; it was the experience that came along with it that I missed.

It was most definitely an eye opening experience that exposed me to a culture completely different from the one I know. I look forward to going back down in the spring and reuniting with my adopted Hispanic family!
