Now that most of the danger of the pandemic has moved behind us, the opening holiday shopping week is in full swing. The sales help shoppers to get gifts for their loved ones at a reduced price, allowing them to buy more. Ads for the sales had popped up on social media platforms, showcasing popular items for a good price.

The weekend consists of three days for each type of sale to occur. These are Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and most commonly known, Black Friday. Among high schoolers, online shopping is the most popular.  Although the days are categorized by platform, many run sales throughout the weekend. Having the extended sale days help shoppers to be able to attain popular items and those special things that are currently trending.

“I did a lot of online shopping. I bought clothes and a pair of Jordan’s that I saw on TikTok,” states Chloe Miller, junior.

Social media had a lot of influence on the shopping weekend. Adds for different items were all over apps such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. These items were what became the things to buy. Shoes and clothes that are normally quite expensive because of their popularity due to social media were on sale.

“I bought more converse this weekend. They are everywhere and I love wearing them,” said Katie Rhodes, sophomore.

Just because something is trending on social media does not necessarily mean you should buy it. Personal preference was also a factor shoppers kept in mind when they went out looking for deals. Finding something that will have many uses is more important than the item being popular.

“I found a lot of cute tops and sweaters when I was online shopping, but for the most part I usually stay with my own style,” said Claire Morris, freshman.
