New Year, Better You

As we’ve approached the start of 2019, we have the best intentions of making new year resolutions for ourselves, and try to stick to them throughout the year, whether it is to eat healthier, work out more, or not to procrastinate in school. However, life can get in the way, keeping us from achieving our goals and becoming the best version of ourselves, and we therefore start to backslide on the resolutions we promised to keep. A research conducted by the University of Scranton found that only eight percent of people who make resolutions actually follow through, so when trying to fulfill our resolutions there are a few things we should keep in mind along the way.

Start Small

The larger of a goal we make the more daunting and overwhelming it can be as the year goes on, to avoid this it is better to break it up into smaller goals. Outline small goals that can be attained within just a few months and only include items that will help you reach the overall goal. Breaking a large goal into smaller pieces will allow you to stay focused and determined to succeed in the future.

Consistency is Key

A lot of people that start their journey on becoming the best version of themselves they can be, can become discouraged quickly due to not seeing their desired results fast enough. Although it may take a while to get to where we want, anything we want in life comes with time and hard work, so it is important to practice patience as we try to achieve our goals for the year.

“I know something that helps me stay on track of my goals is making a schedule for yourself, doing it on a daily basis will make it a habit and will ultimately help you stick to your resolutions,” Junior Evan Johnson said.

Focus on the Bigger Picture

Future thinking can help you stay on track of your goals. Imagine yourself reflecting on how well this year turned out for you and how much you were able to grow as an individual or  someone asking you how you were able to be so successful this past year. Picture-perfecting thinking can help remind you of everything it is you desire to achieve, and when you do, you will be relieved that all the work that went into the process was worth it.

“Keeping the bigger picture in mind reminds me that every step I take is a step closer to being the best I can be,” Junior Maika West said.
