The Guide to Happiness

Feeling down doesn’t mean there’s something wrong. It’s normal, healthy even, to let your feelings out. With that being said, normal only goes so far. If you feel life is a constant drag, full of sadness and exhaustion, it’s time for a change. It won’t be easy, but if it’s something you’re willing to work for, happiness can be achieved.

The first word of advice: stay positive. According to Longhurst in the article Benefits of Thinking Positively, and How to Do It, “The optimistic had a significantly lower risk of dying.” There are many physiological benefits to staying positive; higher energy levels, stronger immune systems, better stress management, a longer life span, and more! Stick with those that are encouraging and have a positive impact, and get rid of the drama-seekers that look to help no one but themselves.

Stop being so self-critical. Your happiness doesn’t strip anyone else’s joy. Focus on your wellbeing, because you deserve it! Laugh through tears to find the light in the dark. A study shown by Memarian in the article The Effect of Laughter Yoga Exercises on Anxiety and Sleep Quality proves laughter lowers stress, anxiety, and depression, also improving coping skills, mood, and self-esteem.

“Exercise has such a profound effect on our happiness and well-being that it is an effective strategy for overcoming depression,” states Haden, author of Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Incredibly Happy. When exercising, endorphins, dopamine, adrenaline, and endocannabinoid are released… all of which boost your happiness and confidence in yourself.

Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Those who are sleep-deprived become more negative and emotional. Sleep helps your body recover and repair. Without enough sleep, you may feel irritated or depressed, as your brain can’t be logical in controlling emotions.

Taking time for yourself is crucial. Let yourself relax from the stressors in life. If there seems to be no time, make time. You come first, and are more important than any grade you will ever get. Worrying is worthless. Everyone should know of the 5 by 5 rule: If it won’t matter in 5 years, don’t spend over 5 minutes worried about it. Remember that you only live once. If you don’t live now, when will you? Don’t waste valuable time on the bad. Take risks. Enjoy life no matter what. If you aren’t happy… What’s the point?
