Tik Tok vs Musically
Throughout the years, we have seen many social media apps change and develop through updates and enhancements. Musical.ly, an app made for video creation was changed to be the app as we know it now, Tik tok. Teens who have used both apps are able to compare and contrast in trends and utility as the years pass on.
Musically was a platform for many of the viral trends and songs created in the 2014-18 era such as “Don’t let me down” by The Chainsmokers, “One Dance” by Drake, and “Me too” by Meghan Trainer. A few of the trending creators you might recognize as well, influencers such as Ariel Martin, Jacob Sartorius, and Cameron Dallas. These creators and songs were a huge part of the app’s success and created for an environment to be able to lip sync, dance, and make funny content.
“Users film videos of themselves lip-syncing or acting out comedy sketches, up to 15 seconds long, and can choose from a database of songs, effects, or sound bites.” stated by Rebecca Jennings in “Tik Tok explained.”
Tik Tok, an app used for the same purpose as Musical.ly, was created in August of 2018. Familiar songs such as “Supalonely” by Benee, “Say So” by Doja Cat, and “Outwest” by Travis Scott were featured in the dance trends created by some creators on the app. Trending Creators include some familiar faces you may have seen on your For You page like Charli Damelio, Addison Rae, and Haley Sharpe.
In 2018, news came out that the app Musical.ly would be rebranded to be Tik tok. Although the rebrandment was made to keep the app the same with a few software changes, the main purpose of the app changed significantly. Musical.ly was an app focused on the creation of choreography and music videos and Tik tok has evolved to be an app that goes from different ranges of dances to comedic content.
These apps made for capturing a short video although made to hold the same purpose are still very different. Both very popular apps were and are one of the most popular apps and will continue to be.
“Although TikTok is mainly known for its musical aspect, it is possible to find in it a great variety of content ranging from monologues to comedy videos. In contrast, Musical.ly was focused exclusively on the creation of choreography and music videos,” described in “malavida.com”.
