Edgar Wright is known for his action movies, having directed films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Ant-Man, and more. When you hear Wright’s name, you have high expectations. Wright’s 2017 Baby Driver is no exception to the rule. Despite the name not being the typical epic movie title, that’s precisely what Baby Driver is: an action-packed, suspenseful, dramatic film full of hurt, laughter, and an amazing soundtrack.

The plot follows Baby, a talented getaway driver with a love for music. His music addiction had always been there, but it became obsessive after a childhood car accident left him with tinnitus, also known as ringing in the ears. The ringing can be constant, or it can come and go. Baby always heard ringing, so he drowned it out with music. That’s where the cinematography comes into play. For every intense moment in the heists Baby partakes in, he puts on a different song. Then, the epic scene will play out to the beat of whatever music Baby is listening to, making for an extraordinary experience for the viewer. 

Not only did Baby Driver have a fantastic soundtrack to go along with the entire movie, but almost all of the characters also had layers, something I don’t see very often with modern media. As the plot moved along, you were able to become sympathetic with the people Baby crossed paths with without having been told their entire life story. Credit is due there both to the writers who created the characters and the actors who portrayed them. It was like you could see things from their perspective, even though some of the things they did were not the best at all.

Usually, I’m not one for epic heist movies. Sure, they can be exciting at times, but there is rarely any overarching plot that gets me to be intrigued. That was not the case with Baby Driver. By the climax, I was quite literally on the edge of my seat, constantly wondering what would happen next to our protagonist, Baby. Overall, I would recommend watching this movie. It’s the perfect mix of romance, action, drama, and comedy all in one. I give Baby Driver 10/10 stars. I genuinely couldn’t find a single thing I dislike about it.
