Happy St. Patty’s Day
Who is St. Patrick and why do we celebrate him? St. Patrick was a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day started being celebrated in 1737 in Boston, Massachusetts. Mar. 17 is the day that St. Patrick died and ever since the Irish have celebrated his death, however in America, we just see it as a day you can wear green, make traps, and make sweet treats.
St. Patrick’s Day did get celebrated in America because when the Irish moved to America during the Potato Famine in Ireland during the year of 1845, they brought their traditions with them.
Why do you wear green on St. Patrick’s Day? And why do I get pinched if I don’t? As we all know St. Patrick’s Day is tied to luck and leprechauns. If you wear green, an old folktale says that you become invisible to leprechauns and you won’t get pinched! So make sure to wear your green on March 17!
Some people have crazy traditions for wearing green. The Chicago River gets dyed green. The river not only gets to participate in wearing green, but it also shows city workers all the illegal sewage discharge.
Why are leprechauns involved in this day? Leprechauns are a part of old tales they are tied with green, luck, and fortune so eventually they got put into St. Patrick’s Day.
