The RHS boys and girls wrestling team both faced adversity in their match-ups against Hilmar, but still continued to show up for their teammates. On Wednesday, Jan. 21 2026, the wrestling team faced off against Hilmar in a relentless fashion. But of all duel meets, this one was special. In this meet, the wrestlers got the chance to honor some of Ripon High’s
staff. Varsity wrestler Kelcie Smith stated on why she decided to honor Mrs. Burton. Smith said, “I feel like she’s a very intelligent teacher, and doesn’t get enough representation.”
The girls wrestling team unfortunately couldn’t find a way to come out on top against Hilmar, with a final score of 24-42. The matches were intense, and the girls really had to dig deep, however the Hilmar girls team put up too strong of a fight. When asked about the loss, Smith stated “We’re doing pretty well so far, it’s just Hilmar was a tough team and there were a lot of girls so I think we’ll be able to bounce back against Escalon.” While this loss was unfortunate, the girls have more motivation to bounce back, and keep on pushing for victory.
As for the boys wrestling team, they put on a show with a win of 60-18. The boys matches were tough, with many matches continuing on until the very last period. The ferocity of the boys duels were visible, with each wrestler giving it their all to secure the win. When asked about the victory, Joaquin Rodriguez stated

“We needed that victory, all good stuff came from it.” While not every match was perfect, and the boys did have their struggles, what matters most is the collaboration, and determination of the team. Winning was a team effort, and the boys continue to thrive through their hard work.
Throughout the ups and downs of the season, the wrestling team is
on track to finish the season strong. Adversity will not define their season, and will only make them stronger. While the outcome wasn’t perfect, the team will continue to show their efforts on the mat and prepare for their next duel meet.
